The Google Effect: How Search Is Reshaping Memory and Focus

In 2011, psychologist Betsy Sparrow and colleagues published a study in Science that gave a name to something most people had already noticed in themselves: when you know information will remain easily searchable, your brain deprioritizes storing it. The paper, titled "Google Effects on Memory," found that participants who expected to have later access to a set of facts remembered the facts themselves poorly — but remembered exactly where and how to find them again with high accuracy. The brain wasn't failing to encode information. It was making a resource allocation decision.

What the Original Study Found

Sparrow's team ran four experiments. In one, participants typed trivia statements into a computer; half were told the statements would be saved, half were told they'd be erased. Those who believed the information would be erased recalled significantly more of it. In another experiment, when participants were asked to remember both the statement content and the folder it was saved in, they were consistently better at recalling the folder location than the actual fact — suggesting the brain treats "where to retrieve information" as a distinct, and sometimes preferred, category of memory. Researchers call this transactive memory: outsourcing storage of certain knowledge to an external system, whether that's a colleague, a library, or a search engine, while retaining the index of where to find it.

This Isn't New — But the Scale Is

Transactive memory itself isn't a modern phenomenon; couples and coworkers have always divided up what to remember. What changed is the object being outsourced to. A search engine has no limits on what it can hold, is available instantly, and requires no social reciprocity. A 2021 review in World Psychiatry by Firth and colleagues examined a decade of research on internet use and cognition, and concluded that heavy reliance on online search is associated with reduced engagement in effortful, active recall — the kind of retrieval practice that neuroscience research consistently links to stronger long-term memory formation. The concern isn't that search engines make people "dumber." It's that a mental skill exercised less often tends to weaken, the same way any underused capacity does.

Attention, Not Just Memory

A related and arguably more consequential finding comes from a 2017 study in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research by Adrian Ward and colleagues, sometimes referred to as the "brain drain" study. Researchers found that the mere presence of a smartphone — face-down, silenced, in another room versus on the desk — measurably reduced participants' available cognitive capacity on tasks requiring sustained attention, even when nobody touched the phone. The effect was strongest in people who reported the highest dependence on their devices. The implication is that constant access to outsourced information doesn't just change what gets remembered; it appears to consume attentional bandwidth just by being nearby, in anticipation of being used.

The Learning Science Angle

Cognitive scientists Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke demonstrated in a widely cited 2006 study in Psychological Science that actively retrieving information from memory — testing yourself — produces dramatically better long-term retention than rereading the same material multiple times, even though rereading feels more productive in the moment. This is the same underlying mechanism the Google Effect works against: every time a fact is looked up instead of retrieved from memory, the brain skips the exact process — effortful recall — that would have strengthened that memory trace. Convenience and consolidation are, to a real extent, in tension.

What Actually Helps

None of this argues for abandoning search engines, which are unambiguously useful. The research instead points toward being deliberate about which information deserves internal storage versus external offloading. Cognitive scientist Annie Murphy Paul makes a related but distinct case in The Extended Mind: that offloading isn't inherently bad — the brain has always used the body, environment, and other people as extensions of cognition — but it works best when it's intentional rather than reflexive. Writing something down to free working memory for a harder problem is a different act than reflexively reaching for a phone before attempting to recall anything at all.

Practically, this suggests a few habits worth testing. Before searching for something you've looked up before, try to recall it first — even a failed retrieval attempt strengthens memory more than skipping straight to the answer. For material you actually want to retain, use active recall and spaced repetition rather than passive rereading, a method detailed thoroughly in Make It Stick. And for daily planning or note-taking, a physical or semi-physical capture system — writing by hand before digitizing — has been shown in separate research to improve encoding compared to typing alone, since handwriting is slower and forces more selective, generative processing of the material.
