The gap between marketing and evidence here is one of the widest in the supplement world, and it's worth understanding both what biotin actually does and where the claims outrun the data.

What Biotin Actually Does

Biotin, also called vitamin B7 or vitamin H, is a water-soluble B vitamin that acts as a cofactor for five carboxylase enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis, amino acid metabolism, and gluconeogenesis. It's genuinely essential — without it, cells can't properly process the building blocks of energy and structural proteins like keratin. The recommended adequate intake for adults is just 30 mcg per day, and true dietary deficiency is rare in people eating a varied diet, since biotin is present in eggs, nuts, seeds, salmon, and organ meats, and is also synthesized by gut bacteria.

Older, smaller studies on brittle nails — such as a 1993 uncontrolled trial in Swiss patients — reported improvement, but the trials lacked placebo controls and randomization, so it's not possible to separate a genuine biotin effect from natural nail growth cycles or expectation effects. Biotin is used as a binding agent in the assay technology itself, and supplemental doses — especially at the 5,000 to 10,000 mcg levels sold for hair and nail support — can cause falsely low or falsely high results depending on the test.

There have been documented clinical cases where biotin interference masked a genuine cardiac event on a troponin test. If you supplement anyway, the real precaution to take seriously is disclosing it before any blood test.
