Astaxanthin: The Antioxidant Backed by Real Research

Astaxanthin is a red carotenoid pigment produced by the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis — the same organism that turns salmon flesh pink after they eat it. (2013), published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, gave trained cyclists 20mg daily for four weeks and found no improvement in time-trial performance, muscle damage markers, or oxidative stress markers compared to placebo. Earlier open-label studies (Malmsten & Lignell, 2008) reported reduced muscle soreness, but without a placebo arm those results are unreliable. It's a smaller study, but it's one of the few showing a clear dose-response relationship in humans, which strengthens the case that the effect is real rather than incidental.

Dosing and What to Look For

Most positive human trials used between 4mg and 12mg daily, taken with a fat-containing meal since astaxanthin is fat-soluble and poorly absorbed otherwise. Natural algal-sourced astaxanthin is the form studied in the trials above; look for a listed extraction source (Haematococcus pluvialis) rather than a proprietary blend. Effects on skin and eye strain markers took four to eight weeks to appear consistently across studies — this is not a same-day supplement.
